New guide to mental health and debt sparks criticism from debt collection industry

A new “Guide to mental health and debt” from has been criticised by the Credit Services Association as being “out of touch with the modern debt collection industry”.

The Guide, a free downloadable booklet supported by a range of mental health and debt advice organisations, is designed for people with mental health problems and those caring for them.  It covers how to handle debts when unwell, working with banks, free debt counselling, specific tips for bipolar disorder or depression sufferers, whether to declare a condition and more.

But the Credit Services Association says the guide “does not paint a true picture of what the consumer can expect, and simply feeds an existing prejudice”.
