What is the bankruptcy register?
Bankruptcy is a matter of public record just like births, deaths and marriages.
It is recorded on an Insolvency register (sometimes referred to as the Bankruptcy register) along with IVAs and Debt Relief Orders and can be viewed online at the Insolvency Service website or at your local Official Receiver’s office.
The details that are published are name, address, date of birth, occupation, arrangement date, the court at which the case was heard, status of the Bankruptcy and whether a Bankruptcy Restrictions Order has been made.
Details of a Bankruptcy will stay on the Bankruptcy register for three months after the date of discharge.
You can read more about Bankruptcy and whether it is suitable for your situation in our Bankruptcy section.
Debt Advice Foundation is a registered UK charity offering free, confidential support and advice on any aspect of debt, including Bankruptcy. If you need to talk to someone about Bankruptcy or would like to discuss the alternatives, please call to speak to an adviser.
