Where can I get debt help?

You can get debt help either from a specialist debt advisor that will undertake to do the work on your behalf or you can use an online debt guide and negotiate with your creditors yourself.

The main advantage of negotiating yourself is that you are in complete control of the process. The disadvantages are:

  • You may not know about all of the options available to you; there may be a more appropriate solution for your circumstances than an informal management plan.
  • It can be time-consuming, particularly if you owe money to lots of different creditors.
  • Creditors may be less inclined to freeze interest and suspend recovery action on your account than they would if a recognised debt charity approached them on your behalf.

Even if you do feel confident enough to manage the process yourself, we would still always recommend that you speak to an Advisor first, just so you can be sure you are making an informed choice.

If you require debt help, please call the charity's helpline on 0800 043 40 50 to speak to an adviser.
