Research suggests 5% of homeowners owe their energy supplier money

The survey from GoCompare of over 1,000 homeowners revealed that those in debt generally owe on average £121.20 to their energy provider.

Of those in arrears; 16% owe £200 or more while 4% confessed to having no idea how much they owe.

The majority haven’t contacted their supplier to discuss the problem, with 87% of those struggling to pay having not contacted their supplier to ask for help.

David Rodger, CEO of Debt Advice Foundation said;

“This report shows that 16% of those in debt arrears were ignoring the debt, in the hope it will sort itself out. Unfortunately this is when debts can start to pile up and cause immense strain as people take out other credit to pay off existing debts.

“Callers often get in touch when they run out of options, but debt issues can be resolved more easily if they are tackled earlier. Those struggling with any kind of debt should speak to a debt advice charity, who can advise them on how to negotiate a repayment plan with their creditors or a stop in interest and charges.”
