As the nights draw in and the bitter winter weather approaches, many UK families are worrying about their New Year fuel bill.

Energy price comparison site – uSwitch, has found that 60 per cent of households are concerned, with one in five already struggling to pay their energy bills.

It is believed that 6.5 million UK households are in debt to energy providers and as a debt advice charity, we know that final demands from utility suppliers can put added pressure on people who are finding it difficult to keep their home afloat.

In the run-up to the peak time of year for heating costs, the survey claims that 73 per cent have started or are planning to cut back on their energy usage to help keep their bills to a minimum.

Here at Debt Advice Foundation, we often advise people to check that they aren’t paying over the odds for their energy, as shopping around for the best deal may reduce bills – helping people have a cosy, but more cost efficient Christmas.

Anyone finding it difficult to pay their energy bills can call our helpline team 0800 043 40 50 for free debt advice and specialist support.
