Football League drops short term loans company Wonga as website sponsor

The Football League is to remove advertisements for short term loan company Wonga from its clubs' websites after signing a new sponsorship deal.

The move comes just three weeks before members of the Football Supporters Federation were due to vote on a motion calling for the lender's advertisements to be removed from club websites.

A spokesman for the Football League said the deal with Wonga had come to an end and they were not seeking to renew it; the decision to pull the adverts was not down to the motion but was as a result of the new sponsorship deal, he said.

The supporters' campaign, championed by Labour MP for Walthamstow Stella Creasy, is also calling on the Football Association to extend its ban on alcohol and gambling advertising on merchandise for those aged under18 to include high cost credit companies.

Supporters are being asked to write to the Chair of the FA, David Bernstein, to highlight their support for campaign and to request that the FA “help limit the presence of these companies in football”.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the fans of 18 football clubs had called on their sides to stop carrying advertising by payday lender Wonga on their websites, and were encouraging the supporters of more than 60 other clubs to follow suit.
