Callers pretending to be from Debt Advice Foundation

We have noticed an increase this year of reports that the general public are receiving unsolicited calls from someone who is claiming to be from Debt Advice Foundation.

 

Calls are received from a mobile telephone number and the caller states that they are calling to help with debts. Many of these callers will try and collect personal details and if questioned may say that if someone needs help with their debt they should ring Debt Advice Foundation. More worryingly, some may claim to be Debt Advice Foundation and even quote the charity’s registered charity number.

 

Those who have been called are often very angry that they have been spoken to in a rude manner, or that the caller has their details. Many find it very difficult to believe that these calls have not originated from Debt Advice Foundation and this means that the charity’s reputation has been damaged. 

 

So how can you tell if it's a scam or not? 

 

It is an offence to impersonate a charity and these calls could be attempts at identity theft. Debt Advice Foundation will never;

 

• Call anyone unless it has been requested in a conversation with our advisers or via the call back form on our website
• Pass on personal information to anyone, as our services are completely confidential
• Request donations, as we are self-funded

 

Whilst there is little the charity can do to stop these calls, if you have received a call which you suspect is fraudulent, please report it to Action Fraud, who investigate scams and viruses.
