The first day of term meant a particularly early start for a group of pupils at Southlands High School in Chorley.  They had a starring role in a series of outside broadcasts from the school for BBC Breakfast, showcasing the money management lessons that they developed as part of national debt charity Debt Advice Foundation’s financial education programme.

Young people aged 14 and 15 told BBC Business presenter Steph McGovern about the lessons they have developed to teach primary school children about money management.  Using Money Diaries and presentations written and devised in school, they teach nine and ten-year-olds how to tell the difference between “wants” and “needs”, how to help keep family spending down and how to balance a budget and get best value from their pocket money.

The series of interviews from the school also included former deputy head teacher at Southlands High School, Brian Souter, who is now working with Debt Advice Foundation to roll out their financial education programme.  Guests at the school for the programme were Michaela Kirsop-Holdford of the Personal Finance Education Group (pefg) and Clare Francis of Moneysupermarket.com.
